Poem
People had told me that love was a dream.
I’d wondered if it was as fun as it seemed.
In movies, it’s magic, and books made it lush
In songs, it’s like this adrenaline rush.
Now I know that none of that was true,
Because love isn’t fun – love ruins you.
What’s fun isn’t love, it’s what happens pre,
Because falling in love was the fun part you see.
You fall before you love, and that falling is fun,
You’re consuming a person who might be the one.
You don’t love them yet, but you know that you could,
And that excitement is just so pure and so good.
You soak up this person with levity and thrill,
But your heart’s not attached, so it bends to your will.
You protect it, you guard it, you don’t let it break,
Youre in control so not much is at stake.
It’s joy and laughter with no expectations,
Deepened connections with no complications.
It’s just ice cream and movies and fun little dates,
But then your heart yields and opens its gates,
And now it’s exposed, so vulnerable and weak,
Love threatened levity, pushed it off peak.
Love makes it hurt and love drives you mad.
Makes all good things between you go bad.
Now it’s complicated, too much to unroll.
Now it’s too big and too hard to control,
Now there are rules and regulations,
Now there’s restraint and calculations.
More work and more trouble, not fun at all.
So I hated to love. I just loved to fall.
